Parts of a Boat

Why would a sailor need to know all the different parts of the boat? What do you think would be the point of the centerboard? What does a Halyard do?

They would need to know the different parts to help fix or steer the boat different ways. They also need to know parts to find out what they need if the boat breaks down.

I believe that a sailor should know the different parts of the boat so that she/he can replace the part is damaged or missing. Divergently, when sailing a boast one wants to be aware of the parts the tranportation system consists of.
